Why Store Bought Drain Cleaner Costs More Than It Saves

A slow drain and a damaged sewer line look similar at first, and treating one like the other usually makes things worse.

Why Store Bought Drain Cleaner Costs More Than It Saves

The bottle under the sink

Almost everyone has reached for a bottle of drain cleaner from the store when a sink starts running slow. It's fast, it's cheap up front, and it feels like doing something about the problem yourself instead of waiting on a plumber. The trouble is what that bottle actually does to the pipe once it's poured down there.

What chemical cleaners do to your pipes

Store bought drain cleaners work by using a strong chemical reaction to eat through whatever's clogging the line. That same reaction doesn't stop at the clog. Poured down an older pipe, especially anything metal, repeated use corrodes the inside of the pipe itself, which means you're trading a slow drain today for a weaker, more failure prone pipe later. It's a real cost, it just shows up months down the road instead of on today's receipt.

Signs your clog is bigger than one drain

A single slow sink is usually just that, a single slow sink. A few signs point to something further down the line instead.

  • Foul smelling water coming back up a drain
  • Water backed up in more than one fixture at the same time, like a toilet and a nearby shower
  • A sink or toilet that backs up and then drains slowly, or not at all
  • Damaged wiring or electrical fittings caused by a leak you can't otherwise explain
  • Leaks showing up in a roof, wall, or ceiling with no obvious plumbing above them

When more than one fixture is affected at the same time, that's usually not a local clog. It's a sign the main line carrying everything out of the house has a problem further down, and no amount of drain cleaner poured into one sink is going to fix that.

Camera inspection and drain jetting

Instead of guessing, we run a camera video inspection down the line to actually see what's happening, whether that's roots, a buildup of grease and debris, or a break in the pipe itself. Once we know what we're dealing with, drain jetting clears a line with high pressure water rather than chemicals, which is effective on buildup that a snake alone won't fully clear and doesn't corrode the pipe the way a chemical cleaner does.

What a sewer line repair looks like

If the camera shows an actual break or a section of pipe that's collapsed or root damaged, rather than just buildup, that's a sewer line repair, not a drain cleaning. We handle sewer line repair and replacement as its own job, and because it's a bigger scope of work than a routine drain call, we back it with a 1 year labor warranty and 10 year parts warranty rather than the 90 day warranty on general repairs.

What else backs up when a sewer line is the problem

A sewer line camera inspection sometimes turns up more than the original complaint. It's not unusual to find an aging backflow prevention setup at the same time, which matters because that's the device standing between a sewer backup and your home's clean water supply. If it's due for attention, it's worth handling in the same visit rather than waiting for it to fail on its own schedule.

Why this matters beyond the smell

We've been family owned and working the Edmond, Oklahoma City, Broken Arrow and Tulsa area since 2005. Every plumber we send is a certified journeyman or master plumber, has passed a background check, and shows up in uniform, whether the job is a routine drain cleaning or a full sewer line replacement.

Getting a fair price on a bigger repair

Not every camera inspection ends with good news, and if yours turns up a real sewer line repair rather than a routine cleaning, the price shouldn't be a surprise on top of it. We give free phone estimates, price the job up front once we know what the camera found, and match a fair competing estimate. Financing is available for a sewer line repair or replacement, since it's a bigger job than the drain cleaning call that led to finding it.

Before you reach for another bottle

If a drain is running slow, keeps coming back after you've tried to clear it yourself, or more than one fixture in the house seems tied to the same problem, it's worth a call before another round of chemical cleaner does more harm than good. We give free phone estimates, we're available 24 hours a day, and seniors, teachers and military get 10% off drain cleaning services.
