What actually counts as an emergency at 2am
Water that will not stop moving on its own is the clearest signal. A burst supply line, a water heater tank that has split and is spraying, a sewer backup coming up through a drain or a toilet, or the house losing water pressure entirely all mean a truck gets dispatched regardless of the hour. So does the smell of sulfur or rotten eggs near a gas line, a hissing sound close to a fitting, or a dust cloud kicked up around a gas pipe. Any of those get a call answered the same minute, not a callback in the morning.
A slow drip at a faucet washer, a toilet that runs a little long after it flushes, or a drain that is sluggish but still clearing are real jobs, just not 2am jobs. None of those will flood a house or run up a gas bill overnight, so they get scheduled for a normal visit instead of pulling a crew off an actual emergency somewhere else in the metro.
The call itself is where that gets sorted out. Describe what is happening, how fast it is happening, and whether water or gas is actually moving right now, and the office will tell you honestly whether this is a truck-tonight situation or an appointment this week. Burst and frozen pipes: the water comes off before we do anything else
If a pipe has actually let go, finding the main shutoff and turning it off matters more than anything else you can do before we arrive. It is usually near the water meter or at the point the line enters the house. Shutting it off stops the damage from spreading while a crew is still on the way, and opening the lowest faucet in the house afterward drains what is left in the lines instead of leaving it to find its own way out.
On arrival the first job is isolating the section that failed rather than shutting the whole house down for longer than it needs to be off. From there it is cutting out the damaged run, whether that is copper supply line or an older section, and replacing it with new pipe before the wall or floor gets closed back up. A pressure test before anything gets patched confirms the repair is actually holding, not just quiet for the moment.
A frozen line is its own version of the same problem. Oklahoma gets cold snaps hard enough to freeze a supply line running along an exterior wall or through an unheated crawlspace, and a line that freezes solid can split even before it thaws. Getting heat to it slowly, rather than forcing it, keeps a frozen pipe from becoming a burst one, and if it has already split, the repair is the same as any other burst line: open it, cut it out, replace it, pressure test it.
